The reason behind the 49ers’ failure to extend Brandon Aiyuk’s contract
Let’s not get too carried away. Aiyuk appears to be indifferent to playing for the 49ers or the Steelers and possesses some negotiating power. He would accept an offer from the 49ers if it were the same as what the Steelers had made. What number, though, must the 49ers match?
Brandon Aiyuk appears to be inclined to accept the Steelers’ offer of $28 million per season.
The 49ers are unwilling to offer him more than $26 million a season, and they haven’t done so yet. However, new sources indicate that the 49ers are hopeful that they can reach a long-term agreement with Aiyuk and have re-engaged him in contract negotiations.
I have little hope.
Let’s not get too carried away. Aiyuk appears to be indifferent to playing for the 49ers or the Steelers and possesses some negotiating power. He would accept an offer from the 49ers if it were the same as what the Steelers had made. What number, though, must the 49ers match?
Assume that Aiyuk would receive precisely $28 million from the Steelers each season. In Pennsylvania, there is a flat 3.07% state income tax rate. Thus, after Pennsylvania’s state income taxes, Aiyuk would make, on average, $27,140,400 every season.
In California, the wealthiest individuals pay a 12.3% state income tax. which indicates that he would make $24,556,00 after state income taxes if the 49ers were to give him $28 million a season. Compared to what he would earn with the Steelers, that is $2,584,400 less every season.
Therefore, the 49ers would need to pay him almost $31 million a season in order to properly match Pittsburgh’s offer. Furthermore, I highly doubt the 49ers would award Aiyuk with that much cash. I don’t think he will sign an extension with them because of this. It appears more likely that once they realize they can’t afford Aiyuk’s asking price, they’ll deal him to the Steelers.
